Mandatory

  1. “Wearing a seatbelt is mandatory for all passengers in the car.”
  2. “The company holds a mandatory meeting every Monday morning.”
  3. “The court handed down a mandatory life sentence for the crime.”

与其相对的是 optional(可选的)或 voluntary(自愿的)。

联想 Command(命令)。

In our small town, it was mandatory for every house to have a red flower in the window during the spring festival. No one knew why, but it was the law. One year, a newcomer forgot the mandatory flower. Instead of a fine, the neighbors brought him ten red roses. “It’s mandatory,” they laughed, “to be happy here!”
