Inoperative

  1. “The elevator has been inoperative since the power cut.”
  2. “The old law became inoperative after the new regulations were passed.”
  3. “The safety switch was found to be inoperative during the inspection.”

  • 前缀: “in-” (不)

“The space station’s main computer went inoperative after a small meteor hit the satellite dish. The astronauts had to fix it manually while floating in the dark. It took five hours before the screens flickered back to life.”
